Thriving in rocky shallows, the Ise ebi (Japanese spiny lobster) is nearly synonymous with Ise Shima.
With its vibrant orange hue and peerless succulence, this aquatic prize is officially in season from October—and is well worth the wait.

At Zen, we take full advantage of nature’s bounties across the four seasons.
From plump autumn bonito to rich cuts of Matsuzaka beef, premium ingredients are meticulously transformed into superior cuisine over a crackling log fire—a feat of bona fide culinary finesse.

With the summer come Iwagaki oysters, while winter brings Pacific oysters. Harvested in Ise Shima’s local waters, these mouthwatering morsels are loaded with a host of minerals from the surrounding forestland for bold, rich flavor.

The highly-sought maritime treat known as abalone can be found in abundance among swaying forests of kelp.
In fact, its popularity dates back to ancient times, when Ise Shima was charged with supplying the delicacy to the imperial court. After a salty steaming, the resulting flavor and aroma are to die for.

Reeled up in Agocho Anori and prepared via traditional Ikejime style for maximum freshness and flavor, autumn mackerel meets a light touch of salt and vinegar from Futamigaura, giving rise to sushi like no other.

As for our spring bonito, this aromatic delicacy is served with ginger and spring onion. It’s old tradition, freshly served.

Zen Head Chef


Hailing from Chigasaki (of Japan’s Kanagawa prefecture), our head chef is a master of the sushi art with three decades of experience. Though his talent is deep and multi-faceted, his goal is but one: to create the ultimate sushi—the ingredients for which can only be produced from the waters of Ise Shima, and served here, at Zen.

Built on Ise Shima’s Masakijima island, Sushi Yutaka Zen is a members-only sushiya which uses only the finest ingredients, locally sourced from the region’s fishermen and Ama free divers.
